Let's Begin

We need a new phrase for career change. Is it career lurching?

Aug 15, 2025

Last month sometime, I can't remember when, exactly, because I'm still stuck on summer time, someone posted on LinkedIn asking if it's still possible for academics to change careers.

The fact is the job market is really rough. It's hard not just for academics and not just for people in tech. I. I've seen and heard about people who have been forced out in mass layoffs, left toxic jobs that were unsustainable, and others who would love to have something different but are keeping their heads down until they can land the next, better job. Many of those people, who might otherwise search for jobs in the same industry, are looking at all kinds of jobs in all kinds of industries because they need to, because they just need a job.

Which brings me to phrases like "career pivot." Don't get me wrong: I like "pivot." Pivot is elegant and describes the movement so many career changers make: into something completely different. And Jenny Blake's work in "Pivot" is helpful and inspiring to career changers.

And yet. the word "Pivot" suggests smoothness, ease, and a lack of friction. Of course career change has always involved introspection, reflection, and an ability to envision something different and new. But there are times when this ranges from easy to moderately difficult. And then there is now. When things are beyond moderately difficult and so many people are willing to take a job, any job.

When so many people are feeling like they are moving sideways or backwards in their careers, or dropping out entirely from a career, is "career lurching" more apt? What can reflect the motions of hanging on, of taking small steps toward a new career instead of big leaps, hanging on and waiting instead of taking the plunge?

If this is you, I see you. If you're lurching, keep your eyes on the horizon, and keep your balance. It might not be possible to pivot yet, but I have hope for you that the moment will come.
